Loch Nyora Landcare Celebrates 30 Years of Quiet Achievers
News - SGLN
To mark 30 years of dedicated community action, the South Gippsland Landcare Network (SGLN) has published Our Quiet Achievers, a book honouring those who have contributed to Landcare across the region. The publication was launched at the recent SGLN AGM, held at Fleet Wines, Leongatha.Among those recognised were three members of the Loch Nyora Landcare Group (LNLG), celebrated for their long-standing commitment to Landcare and the environment.
Tricia and John Fleming are true Landcare pioneers, instrumental in establishing the Fish Creek Landcare Group, SGLN, Land for Wildlife, and the South Gippsland Bird Observers Group. After moving to Loch, they continued their involvement as active members and valued contributors to the Loch Nyora Group.
Rosemary Knox, together with her husband Garry, first became involved in Landcare through the Jeetho West Landcare Group. Rosemary went on to serve as Treasurer of the inaugural Loch Nyora Landcare Group, founded by Rochelle Virtue-Henry in May 1996, and has been an active committee member ever since.

Our 30th birthday
The Loch-Nyora Landcare Group held its 30-year Birthday Party on the 3rd of May 2026 at Henry's Creek Sanctuary. It was 30 years to the day since the first meeting at the Sanctuary. New owners, Steve Morrison and Bonita May were excellent hosts, and we thank them for their hospitality.
Joan Henry and Sally Henry spoke of the history of the Sanctuary and the formation of our Landcare group. A talk on bird watching from our president Malcolm Brown also entertained us.
All attendees enjoyed the morning tea of scones and tea provided by Loch Country Women's Association and celebrated with a magnificent birthday cake.
Our hosts and Joan Henry cutting the cake.
South Gippsland
Koalas are Special
Following our AGM on 9th November 2025 a very interesting talk was presented by Kelly Smith from Westernport Biosphere explaining why the South Gippsland Koalas are special due to their makeup as generally they have not been affected by breeding with Koalas outside the area.
Weed Control
An interesting session was held. A presentation on how to use drones (see picture) to control weeds was most enlightening.
Hilda Falls Planting
On August 4th,2024 a number of our members went to Hilda Falls and planted approximately 200 plus plants. We look forward to them growing to beatify the Falls viewing area.
